RV fuel cost calculator
Enter the trip distance, your vehicle's fuel use and the fuel price to see how much fuel the trip needs, what it costs, the distance per day and each person's share. It works in km or miles, L/100 km, US mpg or UK mpg, and a price per liter or gallon in any currency. The fuel use starts at the Pitch app's planning values (7, 11 and 13 L/100 km for a car, a car towing a caravan and a motorhome). Replace it with your own figure: real fuel use depends on the vehicle, the load, speed, wind and hills. The Pitch iPhone app will use the same sum for each route once it's released.
Your trip
Same sum as the Pitch app: fuel = distance ÷ 100 × your L/100 km; cost = fuel × price. Price works in any currency. It's a straight estimate with no margin for hills, wind, detours, idling or a generator. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions
How do I calculate the fuel cost of an RV trip?
Divide the distance in km by 100 and multiply by your fuel use in L/100 km to get liters, then multiply by the price per liter. In miles, divide the distance by your mpg to get gallons and multiply by the price per gallon. For 1,000 km at 13 L/100 km and 1.80 a liter, that's 130 liters and 234 in fuel.
How much fuel does an RV or motorhome use?
There isn't one number that fits every RV. Fuel use changes with the vehicle's size and engine, the weight you carry, your speed, wind and hills. The most reliable figure is your own, measured over a few fill-ups.
How do I measure my own fuel use?
Fill the tank and reset the trip meter. At the next fill-up, note the distance and how much fuel went in. L/100 km = liters ÷ km × 100; mpg = miles ÷ gallons. Average a few fill-ups, ideally on the kind of roads you'll drive.
How much more fuel does towing a caravan or trailer use?
It depends on the trailer's weight and shape, the tow vehicle and your speed, and published figures vary widely, so we don't give one number here. Measure a fill-up while towing and enter that. The starting value for a car towing a caravan, 11 L/100 km, is the Pitch app's planning default, not a measured average.
How do I convert mpg to L/100 km?
Divide 235.215 by US mpg, or 282.481 by UK mpg. Both come from 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters, 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 liters and 1 mile = 1.609344 km. A UK gallon is larger, so the same vehicle shows a higher mpg in UK figures.
Which currency does it use?
Any. Enter the price per liter, US gallon or UK gallon in your own currency and the cost comes out in the same currency.
